I was driving to a friend’s house last night when I noticed my front end was clicking, it was a plasticky sort of click. I knew my bug shield was cracking, but I hoped it would last (with duct tape) until I could afford a new one in a couple months (I need a new windshield, new struts and spark plugs first). When I got to my friend’s house, I realized how bad it was.

Kinja'd!!!

Thats a safety hazard right there. I took it off because I didnt want it to fly off on the highway. But that thing is 20 years old (I have the receipt for it), that piece of plastic lasted 2 decades.... Not bad.

But those rubber stopper dealies have left a residue on my hood, any idea on how to remove it without hurting the paint? Ive already tried WD40 to no avail.

Kinja'd!!!

My truck looks so weird without a bug shield, like it had an industrial accident and lost its eyebrows. I will definitely be replacing the bug shield.

I know you’re in the US, but I don’t know where to look down there. Try to find this stuff.

Worked for my deflector. That said only one side had broken off.

I wouldn't fix or replace it, looks better without imo.

Maybe some white spirit and an old rag? That’s my usual go to for anything sticky...

SEM Solve will take the residue off without damaging your paint. I have used it to remove headlight and tail light tinting without damaging the plastic as well as stuck on burnout rubber on my bumper surface. Takes a bit of rubbing with medium pressure, but it works.

Rubbing alcohol works really well on sap, maybe it’ll work on that also? Gasoline is a decent solvent as well.

Just took mine off, and it is amazing how much smoother it is at speed.

Thing has what, 6 spark plugs? Super cheap dude. Also, look into Monroe Quick Struts, and see if they make any for the Ranger. Absolutely the best possible option, because you would be able to install them yourself. Quick Struts are full shock/strut tower assemblies prebuilt and ready to bolt in.

I’ll try isopropanol, thanks. But wouldn't gas eat the paint?

Wouldnt mineral spirits eat the paint though?

It’s already been cured, I doubt it. Have you ever dripped gas when fueling the truck? If not you, I’m sure a PO did. Notice how it’s still in the same condition of the rest of the paint? I’m sure it will be fine, it’s not paint stripper.

I disagree because of the shell

Im confused on how the bug guard is better because of the shell?

I think my truck just looks better with the shell and the bug guard rather than just the shell

I just think the bug shield gives more continuity to the shape of the truck with the shell on

Gas shouldn’t hurt the paint. I usually use an orange oil based cleaner to take off sticky stuff.

This stuff is magnificent. It can removed trim adhesive and dealer stickers from cars and doesn’t screw up the paint.

But isnt that just WD40 with a citrus scent? I already tried WD40 and it didnt work

No, it isn’t anything like WD40. I’ve used it in the past to take the trim bits off of a car and it quickly dissolved the adhesive and made it effortless to take the bits off.

No, smoother as in at speed it doesn't wander or shudder as much. I don't have a lot of power, so any reduction in drag is an improvement.

+1 on Goo Gone. Also, 0nce you’ve got the globs off and are trying to restore the finish, try using some rubbing compound.
